Curio’s for the curious! Upcycled oddments! Randoms, weirdlings and eccentric things! Fantasticalities is a selected collection of embellished and re-presented strange things which have gladdened my heart in some way. From mudlarked Tudor pins to recreated medieval critters, jewellery pieces to homewares, items from the Fantasticalities range are always a talking point.
VR Warranted Fantasticalities grew out of a six month residency at Stryx Community Cafe. This project, Probably Cursed, looked at the nature of curses and the potential for objects to hold memories and attributes of the time in which they existed before they met us – each work beginning as a found object which was then embellished with silver and given its own tale.
The difficulty I had was the tales – they were designed as curses to give these objects a level of agency in the world, but this restriction had a negative impact on allowing the objects the freedom to find their own identity in the making process. So following the residency I’m focusing more on those things that make these objects quite so fantastic and joyous.
