A performative evening of cake with Beverley Riviera and friends.

Down The Cake Hole celebrated the history of cake – its origins, its evolution and its cultural significance. Originally (and in some areas still) a term for a portion of bread, cake has become a glorious item of indulgence that is with us at almost every significant point in our lives.

The Cake Walk

A collection of five historic cakes for the audience to try including ancient greek Placenta, King Cake, Soul Cakes, Shortbread and Depression Cake. There was also a recipe book with essays for audience members to take home that’s available online here.

Film, 10 minutes

A short cookery program and history lesson hosted by Beverley Riviera, who explains the history of illusion cakes while demonstration how to make a lifelike giant burger out of baked goods.

Installation and performance.

Beverley Riviera is demonstrating how to make her signature sponge cake, but everything is going wrong. A two hour durational performance with Emily Scarrott as Beverley’s long suffering assistant who has finally decided to get her own back.
